Improved semi-online makespan scheduling with a reordering buffer

چکیده
We study semi-online scheduling with a reordering buffer for identical parallel machines. In this problem, jobs arrive one by one and the online algorithm is equipped with a buffer of limited size, which can be used to reorder the jobs when making scheduling decisions. When the buffer is full, one of the jobs in the buffer must be irrevocably assigned to a machine before the next job can be revealed. No preemption is allowed and the objective is to minimize the makespan. We propose an optimal online algorithm using a buffer size of 2.068m and a 1.5-competitive algorithm using a buffer size of 1.477m, where m is the number of machines. Both results improve upon the best existing buffer sizes for the corresponding competitive ratios by a constant fraction of m.

Online Minimum Makespan Scheduling with a Buffer
In this paper we study an online minimum makespan scheduling problem with a reordering buffer. We obtain the following results, which improve on work from FOCS 2008: i) for m identical machines, we give a 1.5-competitive online algorithm with a buffer of size 1.5m, which is better than the previous best result : 1.5-competitive algorithm with a buffer of size 1.6197m; ii) for three identical ma...
متن کاملPreemptive Online Scheduling with Reordering
We consider online preemptive scheduling of jobs, arriving one by one, on m identical parallel machines. A buffer of a fixed size K > 0, which assists in partial reordering of the input, is available to be used for the storage of at most K unscheduled jobs. We study the effect of using a fixed sized buffer (of an arbitrary size) on the supremum competitive ratio over all numbers of machines (th...
متن کاملOnline scheduling with a buffer on related machines
Online scheduling with a buffer is a semi-online problem which is strongly related to the basic online scheduling problem. Jobs arrive one by one and are to be assigned to parallel machines. A buffer of a fixed capacity K is available for storing at most K input jobs. An arriving job must be either assigned to a machine immediately upon arrival, or it can be stored in the buffer for unlimited t...
متن کاملSemi-online scheduling revisited
Makespan minimization onm identical machines is a fundamental scheduling problem. The goal is to assign a sequence of jobs, each specified by a processing time, to parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum completion time of any job. Deterministic online algorithms achieve a competitive ratio of about 1.92. Due to this relatively high competitiveness and the lack of progress in the area o...
متن کاملMinimizing the total tardiness and makespan in an open shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times
We consider an open shop scheduling problem with setup and processing times separately such that not only the setup times are dependent on the machines, but also they are dependent on the sequence of jobs that should be processed on a machine. A novel bi-objective mathematical programming is designed in order to minimize the total tardiness and the makespan. Among several mult...
